Audition Notice - Sylvia

by A.R. Gurney

Sea Glass Stage Company is holding auditions for A.R. Gurney’s hilarious and heartfelt comedy Sylvia!

Greg and Kate have moved back to Manhattan after years of raising a family in the suburbs. Just as Kate is embracing a new chapter in her life, Greg brings home Sylvia—a lively, opinionated, and very human stray dog he finds in Central Park. Sylvia quickly becomes the center of Greg’s world…and the source of some serious tension in his marriage.

Funny, smart, and touching, Sylvia is a comedy about relationships, growing older, and the sometimes complicated question of who—or what—gets our love and attention.

Character Descriptions

SYLVIA – Female, adult
The dog—but played entirely as a person. Energetic, affectionate, impulsive, jealous, mischievous, and completely devoted to Greg. A highly physical comedic role.

GREG – Male, 40s–60s
A middle-aged husband struggling with dissatisfaction and questions about what comes next in his life. His unexpected bond with Sylvia gives him a renewed sense of purpose.

KATE – Female, 40s–60s
Greg’s wife. Intelligent, practical, independent, and building an exciting life of her own. She is considerably less enchanted by Sylvia than Greg is.

TOM / PHYLLIS / LESLIE – Adult performer
One actor plays three very different characters: Tom, a fellow dog owner Greg meets in the park; Phyllis, one of Kate’s sophisticated friends; and Leslie, a marriage counselor of indeterminate gender. A showcase comedic character track requiring versatility and strong character choices.
